What Is the Right Keyword?

Keyword SEO Cover

You know what the right keyword is, but do you know how to use it?

A keyword or keyphrase is used in a search engine to indicate what content is on your website. If your potential reader is “speaking the same language” as you when they search, your keywords will help draw a kindred spirit or potential client.

We are using “the right keyword” in the title and as the primary keyphrase for this blog. A Google search of that phrase shows more than nine billion results. The first three pages are advice blogs or ads for services.

Qualified Visitor

Qualified Visitors Make the Best Friends

To attract visitors, you must first create content worth discovering and build around the right keyword. If you come up with too many keywords, either narrow your subject or the number of keywords. Why attract visitors if they’re not going to stay for a while?

Use a “long-tail” key phrase if you want specific visitors. For example, if you have a photography website, the keyword “photography” is so competitive it is ineffectual. However, if your focus is “hayfields in Vermont photography,” you describe something special.

The search volume (and competition) for “hayfields in Vermont photography” is lower, but that works for your visitors. If they like what they see, you have a qualified visitor, and maybe a new friend.

Aim for phrases but not too long (four to six words). They say more and rank higher. Try synonyms like “New England hayfields” or “Vermont photos.” It is a tedious process, but if your subject matter stays the same, you will get more answers to your invitations over time.

Algorithm

Concurrently Complex and Straightforward

You can also select negative keywords to exclude words you do not want to target your website. For instance, if you sell eyeglasses, you can exclude “wine glasses.”

Marketing expert, author, and speaker, Neil Patel, recommends looking at your peers.

“Looking at the competition gives you an idea of what [Google algorithm is] looking for,” he says. “You can now take the aspects that make these pages successful and add your personal touches to your posts about similar topics.”

The Google Algorithm description is extensive and rife with variables. It is concurrently complex and straightforward.

What is the Right Keyword?

There is no magical process to improve your SEO with the perfect keywords or phrases to attract the friends you want.

However, one method works every time: Be extremely famous. Oprah Winfrey and Justin Bieber could fill their websites with Latin text and draw more qualified visitors than all the nations combined.

If you’re not famous, don’t fret. Proper use of keywords and phrases will still put you in good standing with SEO ratings on platforms such as WordPress, for example. If you are paying attention to keyword usage, you are likely paying attention to readability, meaning you’ve developed good habits as an online content producer.

What is the right keyword? We’ve just used that phrase for the fourth time in this blog, which will get you a “good job” rating from a Yoast SEO optimizer. However, don’t use it again in another article, or you’ll be guilty of “keyword cannibalization,” pitting you against yourself in future searches. You’ve got enough competition on the World Wide Web.
